Alongside estrogen, it uses a progestogen called drospirenone, which has a gentle counter effect on the kind of fluid retention and oily skin that some women associate with hormonal pills. Take one pill at the same time daily for twenty one days, then a seven day break in which a bleed usually comes, before starting the next pack. If you start on the first day of your period you are protected immediately, otherwise use extra precautions for seven days.

Tender breasts, mild nausea, headaches and spotting are common as the body settles. Mood changes can occur. The serious but uncommon risk is a blood clot.
