EMLA is the cream that takes the dread out of needles and minor skin procedures. It blends two local anesthetics, lidocaine and prilocaine, which work together to numb the surface of the skin so that an injection, a blood test or a small dermatological procedure is felt as little more than pressure.

The method is simple but does require a little forward planning. The cream is applied to intact skin and covered, then left to do its work for around an hour, after which the area is reliably numb. It is a small, practical step that makes a real difference to anyone who finds these moments uncomfortable.

It is for use on intact skin and should be kept away from the eyes. Use it as directed rather than over broad areas.

Apply a thick layer to intact skin and cover with a dressing, leaving it in place for around an hour before the procedure. Remove the cream and dressing just before, and do not exceed the area or time advised.

Lidocaine 2.5 percent and prilocaine 2.5 percent.

The treated patch may briefly look pale, pink or slightly puffy. These local reactions fade as the numbing wears off and the skin returns to normal.

For intact skin only, not broken skin or the eyes. Do not apply over large areas or leave on longer than directed, as too much can affect the blood. Take particular care in infants and young children.
